Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a non-surgical procedure in which the doctors remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Root surfaces are cleaned and smoothed with specially designed instruments. It is important to remove the plaque and tartar from the pockets because it is a habitat for the bacterial toxins that irritate the gums. Plaque and the rough surfaces of tartar make it easier for bacteria to attach to the teeth. The consequences of a bacterial infection may include an unhealthy smile in which the gums recede from the teeth, bone loss, offensive bad breath, bleeding gums and the possibility of losing some or all of your teeth. Recent research has shown periodontal disease may also play a part in the risk of stroke or heart attack.
